I'm Back...

I'm back, finally back. Sunny Kali-fornia. LAPD beating down immigrants in MacArthur Park. Ah the sun, the scandals, how I miss thee. Anyhow, I'm back but not without incident of course. I had the worse plane ride back home. It consisted of sitting on the tarmac for 2+ hours and a final delay of over 3 hours. I'm going to get in contact with Delta's corporate cusomter service to try and get compensation, it was obscene. Not to mention not even the inflight programming was working, not to mention the poor people who bought movies on board that were instead given Norbit to watch, not the movie they choose, gagh.

My first year of grad school is done and it has been good overall. A lot of work but then I've also produced a lot of work and learned a lot of things. I kind of judge time by school years and not by years. So, this year has been good, actually pretty darn good. My film from last year has been getting screened here and there and is nominated for a Student Academy Award which is totally crazy. I have some largish projects I am verry interested in working on. I've had a chance to do a lot of reading. Been able to take a more active role in politics and talk more about it. Rather happy.

First to get a bit of biz out of the way. If you want to come to the Student Academy Awards Award Ceremony, you can request tickets, they're free but you do have to request them. It's only snail mail as well, no online ordering. The award ceremony is June 9th. You can find out more information at oscars.org. To RSVP for tickets you can print out the form from Oscars RSVP Tickets.

I never got a chance to post pictures from the Philadelphia Film Festival. So, here's two pics of me outside of the International House where it screened.

Here's a pic from the making of "I Will Make More Bolts of Linen." It's the final two pages of writing that I did to make it.

Here comes another pic but wait for it, here's some explanation. So, when I was doing some voice over for the Network Neighborhood Watch PSA which I will post hopefully soon, I had to check out a mic. Not a bad mic, a Røde. However, they forgot to give me the shockmount for it. This is the sort of mic you definitely cannot hold in your hand so I was like crap. I decided to bust a McGuyver and make one out of a Pringles can and some painters tape. Worker perfectly. Here it is.

And of course for something completely different.

I Will Make More Bolts of Linen

I'm finally done with this semester, it was a particularly grueling one. One of the fruits of my labor, "I Will Make More Bolts of Linen" is a live action/machinima short made for my Massively Multi-User class. It references John Baldessari's piece "I Will Not Make Anymore Boring Art" from 1971. Taking a look at and pointing at some of the banal aspects of playing WoW and the blind consumptive nature of MMORPG and WoW game play. People in class seemed to like it and actually wanted it to be longer. I may make a recut of it or remake parts of it to make it longer, they wanted a second page turn.

The semester is done and now I'm prepping to move back home. Just secured storage for some of my stuff. Going through the process of sorting and cleaning. Currently doing backups that's why I'm up so bloody late. I will speak more about the final projects and end of the semester later, when I have a large amount of time to write also when I can think clearer, I can tell you though it went well. A lil peeved that I didn't get into the department show, however I'm not sure my piece matched the theme of this semester's show, ITP as a Funhouse. My piece dealt with national security, the manufacturing of information and facts, and all around deception, haha. Indicative of the political climate at ITP? Indeed.

Death, Destruction, & the Weather Coming Up Next to Contend for Student Academy in Nationals

I just got word that my film "Death, Destruction, & the Weather Coming Up Next" is going to be going to the Student Academy Nationals. It ended up being the only film of the four contending in my category to move on to the nationals. So, D.D.A.T.W.C.U.N. will be coming to Los Angeles again with the potential for a Student Academy, which also includes a little bit of cash. I'm pretty shocked, I didn't think I would end up being the only qualifier from my category, I figure they'd move two forward but nope. So, I guess on June 9th we'll find out what happens. I will post the details about the June 9th screening when I receive the information. Wooohooo! Now back to work to finish a final before tomorrow morning, agh.

"Death, Destruction, & The Weather Coming Up Next" Going To Student Academy Awards Regionals!

I just got an email today from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, informing me that my film that I finished last year, "Death, Destruction, & the Weather Coming Up Next," has made it to the regional finals for the Student Academy Awards. 175 films were submitted and 16 were choosen to move on to the regionals in the 4 categories. The whole list is at the bottom. So, from here a maximum of three finalists are choosen to proceed to the nationals in Los Angeles.

The Regional Finalists will be screened on Monday, April 23, 6p.m. at the Northwest Film Center/Portland Art Museum's Whitsell Auditorium. I was pretty shocked to hear this news as well as excited. So, I guess we'll see what happens.

About Bloody Time...

Hello peoples out there! I'm back, finally. It's been forever. I've been so insanely busy. I got back after vacation, got sick, which lingered up until this past weekend. I began training for a position at TekServe, which I got. Final project proposals had to get written up, along with one midterm had to get finished. So, I now have a moment to breathe and update a lil. I have pictures I still need to post and such, that will come later, possibly not this week mind you though.

So, what am I bloody doing for final projects? Well, I'm doing work regarding the hoods from the March 17th anti-war march, mostly anaylsis of the event. I am writing a program that will be used to manufacture a quasi factual "terror index" and "terror related data" percentage by capturing network traffic and then annaylzing the packets contents against my own list of keywords, in order to generate profiles of wireless networks. It's going to be under the guise of an extension of Homeland Security, known as the Neighborhood Network Watch, a play off of Neighborhood watch groups. I will also hopefully be creating a machinama short within WoW for another class that tosses in John Baldessari, as a character as well as references to his work. It will mainly explore the conceptual/post modernistic aspects of game play especially MMORPGs.

I guess, that is all for now since I need to get to sleep. But I will return soon!

Protest, Interviews, & Censorship by the Los Angeles Times

On Saturday, March 17th, 2007, I participated in an Anti-War Protest in Los Angeles on the anniversary of the begining of the current Iraq War. I went with Audrey, (check her blog entry for more details on the protest) other students from Cal Arts and UCLA, and the L.A. Chapter of Artists Against the War. Audrey, had sewn black hood liken to the hoods worn by detainees. These were worn by 10 of us, including Audrey and myself.

At the begining of the march, I was approached by a LA Times staff writer who asked if he could ask me some questions. He requested I remove my hood so I could speak to him, I obliged him. He first asked of course why the hoods. He asked where I was from and if I was a student and was surprised that I was here all the way from New York. The question of why I was out here protesting came up, during the course of answering the question I mentioned the military history of my family. This seemed to interest him a great deal and spent much time going over it with me.

During the rest of the march there was a group of us wearing the hoods that walked together for the most part and were of much interest to the press who were continually photographing us throughout the march.

Upon reaching the end, Audrey and Myself went and stood among the mock coffins placed in the street by Veterens Against the War. A strong symbolic image and also iconic that resulted in a continuous flow of attention from the press. Some of these images can be seen here about midway down the page on LA Indie Media.

That evening Audrey and myself checked the Los Angeles Times website for any article about the protest. We did find one about the protest which included a full 3 paragraphs about me with two quotes. The article was for the most part pro anti-war. The screenshots of the original article are below.

The next day, I returned to New York and upon landing Audrey notified me that the article had been completely edited and the article that went to print was the revised version. The new article looked to marginalize the protest by saying it lacked large turnout, that it included celebrities and musicians, and all in all was a "kind of a freak show." You can see the revised article here Thousands protest in Hollywood.

So, it seems that the article was completely revamped likely by the parental corporate structure that now exercises oversite over its operation. In recent this has caused resignations by editors. Apparently I am worthy of being censored by the "parental units" of the Los Angeles Times.

The 4th Domain, LA, & Post-Symposium Life...

My paper due on Friday found me up til 9am and then getting up 3 hours later to pack, get ready for class, eat, and get to school. I had to present on an essay from the Critical Art Ensemble about basically what they call the "fourth domain" that is essentially transgenic hybrids and the fear of them that has been instilled by culture. It talked about the need for the mitigation of this fear by those who are looking to exploit it for profit, imperialism, due to the fact that they have run out of actual land to exploit in the world, sans-maoist countries and islamic countries. They spoke on the methods that are currently being used to break down enough of this fear in order to move into the domain, even though it uses fairly contradictory/bipolar lines of reasoning and therefore offers an exploitable whole for which the activist maybe able to prevent this by pointing this contradictory nature out. I, noticed in their examples of fear of hybrids and the 4th over the course of history, they left out one seminal example, Genesis 6:4, in the Bible, which speaks of the fallen angels that impregnated the "daughters of men" and in turn brought forth a race of giants and also was a contributing factor to the human race being wiped out in the great flood. The thing is they bring up the fact that current companies and ways to mitigate fear have used Christianity as examples for the fourth domain bringing about miracles and blah, yes they don't directly cite the Bible, which I think would have strengthened their examples of fear (I included this in my paper). We also discussed Baudrillard's "The Spirit of Terrorism." I actually was much more engage in this book than the C.A.E. article. Baudrillard talks about terrorism being a natural resitant force to globalism, that is potentially part of the system, however has evolved in regards to the disequilibrium of the Good/Evil balance that it has attacked globalism in such a way with 9/11 that there is no possible response, and with the attack it has shifted its war into the symbolic realm and hence cannot be combatted with conventional war. There's a slew of other things, however, these are some of the main things.

In the end my paper ended up being more on Baudrillard and using the C.A.E.'s fourth domain to account for the climate of fear that terrorism has brought, both it's usages for terrorists and the state's control apparatuses. I also, found that countries like China that now have hybridized economies and Venezuela with a hybridized government now maybe considered of the 4th Domain of the non-biological order. There was also the equating of God declaring war on himself analogy that Baudrillard brings up to a sort of formation of "Globalanity" (Globalism as Religion in relation to Christianity) by means of having its equivalent of the rebellion of Lucifer with the attack of 9/11 and hence needed 9/11 in order to elevate itself as a tested god, since it is already a quasi-omnipotent force in todays current world. Terrorism has become Globalism's Devil. When I presented it was funny I just started just going and went for like 15 minutes straight and no one like interrupted or had anything to say at all they were all just listening, it was all very eery, like I had total control of the room. The teacher finally jumped in to back up to look directly at the text (oh ya mind you I was in class eating this big roast beef sandwhich and a quart of OJ to drink). When we discussed Baudrillard I was all over that. It was a real good class and got me real fired up. Then it was off to JFK to head to LA to run sound for the CalArts Feminist Symposium.

So, the CalArts Symposium, seems to have been a smashing sucess. Back, in the LA Times, today, or rather yesterday, with a fairly long article, however, there is one mis-quote, argh. Anyhow, from the mixer's perspective things didn't start off terribly auspicious. No sound check for the first panel = reflections + speakers now speaking into the mic + speaking too softly = phasing + feedback + hum = havoc for me. We limped through it, not without my own pain. Catherine Lord who was one the first panel was awesome, I so want to read some of her writings now. The second panel was a vast improvement, with a 4 minute sound check which resulted it in nearly flawless presentation, save for one ghost feedback that came from nowheres (ghost in the system). Emily Roydson had some awesome glasses and good stuff to say, Faith Wilding had a lot of good stuff to say as well. Third panel no problems at all sound wise. It seemed to bring a lot of recurrent themes and issues to a head. It was on the personal as political, which of course you know I'd be interested in since I love politics. Martha Rosler was good even though she tried to sell tees at one point and so was Dorit. Especially liked her mention of a class that she had taught about conducting a class in courtrooms and then having the students actually carry out art projects within the space of a court room setting as audience members. I've spent my amount of time in the court room and never had thought about that.

Post-symposium involved lots of relaxing, such as sitting in a chair stationary for hours with Audrey out in Santa Monica, that was so nice. The weather has been great, gosh, sun, warmth, I haven't seen it in ages, I got to get a lot of it while out with Audrey wandering around the city. Oh, one funny thing, we went into a New Balance store and this guy was like do you need any help and I was like ahh, naw just looking but he saw my shoes, my sunburst tiger's and was like are those, such and such's? I was like ya. he was like I've never seen them in that color ever. It was funny cause it was like he was beholding something sacred, so funny. Had some Lenninade, Audrey had a hand roll, all from Famima, we officially love that place.

Today, went down to L.A. to see the WACK! show at the Geffen. It was good, but it felt like I was walking in a maze, the layout was like agh. There also wasn't much context for a lot of the work, or enough. Audrey was off doing a radio interview for a public radio show with a few other grad students so I wandered the show on my own. Felt like I was in an Escher painting. Mary Kelly, so mathmatical and scientific, not to mention abstract. Saw "Art Education" a short animation about Art History, that was good. Saw some of Martha Rosler's early photo-collage/montages. The layout for them was horrible in regards to their placement in the show, they were all stuffed together and some I couldn't even see cause they were too high. Me and Audrey got some Sushi after, so good. Kicked it at my place for a bit and then headed to el gato rojo for the Martha Rosler lecture. It was good, I got to see a lot of her work, I haven't seen a whole lot of her stuff. Rather interesting that a lot of the subject matters and ideas about things overlap with my work a lot even though I didn't know this at all really. She, even had a minefield in relation to the current Iraq War which was totally like what the heck? However, one thing I don't care for is the kind of rough asthetic, I'm very much a person of very high production, however it takes much longer to create. I asked a question that kind of had her searching for answer and pushed her a little bit off balance, but I'm glad she talked about about what I had asked, if only to reaffirm what I thought she might think. All in all, rather good lecture and good day. Gosh, I can't get over the weather though it's sooo bloody nice! Well I'm off now. Have pictures soon.

Death of Baudrillard and a Place We Can Go...

Baudrillard died today (for those of you who don't know, french post-modernist theorists, very interesting political work, highly recommend) at the age of 77. But, all is not gloomy, because we can always go to Cheers, I mean Jihad?

"Sometimes you want to go, where everybody knows your name. And they're always glad you came. You wanna be where you can, troubles are the same. You want to be where everyone knows your name."

Planet of the Arabs

I came across this piece by Jackie Salloum. It's pretty amazing. I think it speaks for itself so I'll just say that it's a great critique of Hollywood and the West in general. Check out her site, the toys are amazing, "Caterrorpillar."

Snowman Sent to the Camps & Other Stories...

IMG_0419.jpg, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

This snowman is being held at an unknown location. He has not been formerly charged with any crimes against the United States or it's allies. Free Mr. Snow before the C.I.A. melt him. So, does this feel like an elevated construction of imminent danger and martyrdom? Sounds like it to me. We recently had a guest speaker here at I.T.P. names Hasan Elahi. He's an artist who was detained by the F.B.I. while reentering the country via Detroit's Airport. Elahi now ongoing project is basically tracking every aspect of his location and what he does and makes this information freely available to the public. He also informs "his F.B.I. agent" of all his travel plans and reasons for travel directly via email or phone. He says he does this to one, flood the system with amounts of information that may seem useful in tracking him but in turn just create a bottleneck within the system and therefore using surveillance to attack them who surveill him. Essentially a D.o.S. attack or Denial of Service. However his reasons for doing this are merely pertinent to himself to "keep himself out of Guantanamo." However, this work is essentially filled with many holes. First off, if the government had any intent on sending him to a place such as Guantanamo he would have ended up there with no questions asked and evidence and documentation at that point serves no purpose since it is utterly disregarded. Therefore his documentation is ineffectual, null, and void. His reasons therefore are also null and void and instead are large constructs to manufacture a heightened sense of danger and in turn transform himself into a martyr or sorts. He does not attempt to reach a broader audience or help any of the disenfranchised or future disenfranchised with his project and knowledge and instead it is a merely an endeavor of a narcissistic self serving nature. He also has imprisoned himself with in the ideal model created for the state to control its citizens, the Panopticon. Elahi seems to be a mere prime rate example and convert of the Panopticon where he himself has begun to police his own activities and the state itself no longer has to pay him no mind since he has become an extension thereof.

Sorry, all to start off with something so heavy. Much of what I have been learning and thinking about has been extremely weighty. Been reading a lot of Baudrillard, specifically “Simulacra and Simulations” and his book “The Spirit of Terrorism.” I have become very engrossed in both regardless of the fact they can be at times be very abstract and obtuse in nature at times. I have to do a presentation this coming week along with a paper on this book and another writing by the Critical Art Ensemble, all which pertain to the ideas of fear and terrorism.

I’ve also been thinking a lot about post-colonialism, neo-colonialism, simulations of power, power itself, economics, and subversion. This has very much applied to some of the films I watched this week but specifically “In the Year of the Pig” which all of you should go out and watch. It’s great and it’s about the Vietnam War.

I also have been applying this to creating my own sort of fiction for a midterm project for my class talking about massively multiplayer games. I’m doing a project roughly called “Crate & Barrel.” No I’m not selling overly priced kitchenware in games. I am basically going to be making a talking crate and barrel with a FPS aesthetic that will talk to each other and possibly players. They will discuss their role with in the FPS as they have been commodified by the game designers to be architecture to obstruct and complicate the game space as well as sacrifices to the players, hence become a sort of game designer initiated genocide with the player as the one who pulls the trigger. They will also talk about how they have been essentially relocated from their homelands and placed within the FPS game space. Since they’re going to be now located with Second Life, they will be a sort of refugee. It all makes me laugh.

I just sort of finished a short for my experimental documentary class. It’s very strobey and after-imagey. However, it’s something I started on last summer with very complicated editing that had to be deconstructed in order to finish the piece, which were a pain and a half. Why do I have to construct such complicated things?

This past week we had a visiting artist come to one of my classes. Very cool person. She graduated from the M.I.T. media lab. Basically she brought in what she’s currently working on and has worked on in the past, cell phone and WiFi jammers. It was awesome. They’re basically small enough to fit in a pack of cigs and have an effective radius of about 20-30 feet or so. Only one application can I think of the Apple Store on a weekend. Take that MySpace children, email surfers, and the most evil of all the EasyPay! May the attack be readied, haha.

I’ve been playing a lot of og Advanced Wars on my DS. Gosh that game is addicting and I love it. Strategy games are so fulfilling. Also, in gaming news my warlock in WoW now has some festive Chinese New Year’s clothing. It’s pretty tight; I’ll post pictures of me in it.

But yes, this post has become probably one of the longest I’ve ever written and alas it is time to go and do more homework. Sorry for the lack of posts lately but like I said I make no claims to keep this thing up regularly even though I sort of have. See you all laters.

Decryption My Own Encrypted Editing

IMG_0440.jpg, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

So, this is my means to attempt to deconstruct this ridiculous editing idea I started working on over the summer. However, like an idiot I forgot how I was constructing it. Therefore, to try and complete it I had to retrace and try and decrypt my technique and method. I shoulda just finished it in the summer when I started it. Oi!

The Snowey Trenchs

IMG_0413.jpg, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

It finally occurred to me what all the snow piled up on the sides of the roads looks like to me. It looks like trenches and battlements as if it were a war zone. Kind of scary.

Fiercest Animals

The squirrel. Ounce for ounce the fiercest animal in all the animal kingdom. It has no known natural predators.

Stuck in the Snow

This sucks for this guy if he wanted to back out. They just decided to pile up a mess of snow behind his car.

Another poor soul trying to remove their car.

Brawny Man

"Hey baby, do you need a paper towel to wipe that." Oh wait that would be the old Brawny man, the new one is sensitive and kind, not like the old guy who was a porn star (it's all in the mustache). So, anyways I thought this was the most novel way that once could carry a big ole thing of paper towels home from the market since it doesn't fit in a grocery bag. Genius!

Cheese Steaks Calling

So, this week has been quite nice, a lot more laid back than last week which is nice. Audrey is visiting, she's attending the C.A.A. conference here in New York. We've had some great food this week, BBQ, delivery sushi, sit down sushi, good burgers at a clandestine burger joint hidden behind a curtain in a big swanky hotel in midtown even. Been to two gallery openings this week was fun. Met a group of her friends, that were all pretty awesome, especially Wayne and Emily. Also, Jessica, a former NYU alumni who let me in on some of the things in the know, like the library has plastic bags to carry your books home in if you ask. I was like why the f would anyone not bring their backpack. Logic defies me sometimes.

It defies in other ways. Today, I got an email from this curator at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Apparently he saw Cal Arts' Experimental Animation Showcase from this past year, which I was in. So, he saw it and saw my piece and emailed me to ask me to be part of the Philadelphia Film Festival and that I would be screened along with Bill Plympton and Don Hertzfeldt which is like GAGh??? I still have to email him back since I got the email really late tonight. He also was like basically I'd like to see your other work and facilitate you as much as possible in the city of Philadelphia. So, bloody bizarre. I didn't even know our school sent out our reel to prospective people organizing film festivals. Anyhow, whatever the case, I will be emailing him back and finding out the details and if everything goes through "Death, Destruction, & The Weather Coming Up Next" will be heading to the land of cheese steaks and brotherly love.

Black & Green: Revisited

So, I finally got around to signing my java applet for my final project for one of my classes this semester, it's the one with the names of IED victims. Here's the link to Black & Green. Just a refresh of what it is and how it works. Basically it's using the iCasualties.org database on information all Coalition forces who have been killed during the Iraq War by I.E.D.'s. It then parses through the file that I have created from their database (this one currently isn't a live updating one, due to their change in formatting I hope to make it to be able to be live again). It then displays information about those who have died in text form and changes through the names on a semi-random timing each with their own accompanying explosion. This piece I'm going to end up sending to a show at Bethel University that is looking at how to memorialize the Iraq War. So, yeah I just figure I'd put it up so you all can see it and hear it, you do have to turn your volume up a bit though to really hear it, it's a tad quiet at low volume levels, but don't crank it.

The State of the Lt.

It's been awhile since I've actually had something substantial to write about or so it seems I think. This week had been rather busy with kind of culminating in the middle with two of my classes with big projects due. The first was for my experimental documentary class, where I had two short documentaries due on the same topic but done in two different fashions, direct/observational and reflexive/participatory. I decided to do this assignment around my friend Matt's character, Healbotmachl in World of Warcraft. Work flow was a bit of a pain but I succeeded in making them I may post them up later this weekend or sometime in the near future they're not that great as they were done in a weekend, but It's like segway to another project I want to pursue within World of Warcraft which can only be described really as, John Baldessari meets World of Warcraft meets LEEEEEEEEROOOOY JENKKKKKKINNNS!

The other class assignment was a presentation I had to give for another class that's all about massively multi-user games. I of course did my presentation on WoW however I had trouble coming up with a topic and didn't come up with one until the night before the presentation. I decided to do it on naming policies, trends and conventions in WoW. It was a very funny presentation and most of the class was dying laughing including the teachers (one of whom looks like Ron Jeremy). I included real life names int the presentation, such highlights as Stabbymcstabs, Petmypussa (one of matt's characters), Trouserchilli, and Nuck Chorris (I did have a whole section devoted to Chuck Norris). It went over very well, so I was glad. I also was very burnt out having had only about 4hrs of sleep for like two or three days I forget. However, what is good, the bulk of presentation and junk for the whole semester are out of the way since I ended up doing them earlier rather later.

Classes have been very good thus far and engaging for the most part. However going back to my assignment for my documentary class I was about to go off on some of the classmates. The first one was these two students who I really can't stand actually. They used f'n iMovie lightning in their piece and a push wipe and a clock count down wipe. I'm sorry those sins are too grave to be forgiven for. They tried to pass off their bullsh!ttery as their intent to show that they indeed had a perspective and it was their point of view and they wanted it to be "over the top." To that I had to say something and could hold my contempt no longer. I was like I don't believe it worked then because it seems like it was rather haphazardly placed at the end and does not actually convey what you're saying. Had you had been consistent with it maybe, but this was definitely not the case. One person also had a question about one of their shots and was it on purpose that they composed that shot that way, with which it was obvious they hadn't. However, the teacher had a very knee jerk reaction to that and was like every shot has meaning. I feel this is ultimately flawed in it's reasoning and a lil too idealistic and utopian if not naive. Onto the second group of people who I have no bone to pick with however, they decided to do their piece about homeless people. What did they do? They made everything black and white. I had issues with this. I asked them why did they choose to use black and white when it seems that it may over-sentimentalize, marginalize, and aestheticize the subject matter, rather than use color to show the harsh reality. The teacher was like yeah, why did you use black and white? They had no good response to that.

In another class we have begun learning how to snoop on networks and crack them and map them. Very very fun homework I must say.

I'm preparing to send out my IED name piece out to a show about memorializing the Iraq War at Bethel University. I still have to write my proposal, I hope it gets in, I think it's got a good chance I think it's a strong piece.

The NYC recruiter for Apple called me up today to offer me a job actually as a full time Mac Genius, at my pick of stores, however I had to turn down this offer, since it was full time and I have no time to commit 40 hours to a job right now being in school. On another note, I potentially might have an internship with Laurie Anderson however, it's very tentative and I won't know until monday whether or not I got it.

It's cold, it's been bloody cold out here. Early this week I walked to school and it was 9. 9 bloody degrees. It was a lil warmer today which was nice. I'm just glad I'm not in upstate where it's snowing like mad. Unrelated I saw Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Awesome movie and probably one of the best performances I've ever seen by Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro. Great movie, I felt like I was tripping. But ya, I'm tired and it's late. G'nite all.

Issues of Authenticity

So, funny that issues of "Authenticity" come up even with the Transformers, haha. To think one class I'm in right now doesn't want to even deal with the term authenticity. Also, concern with Aesthetic, haha, yes bloody great.

Get Money

Destro, pulls out the 44.

Busta a Serpent? "Whoo-Hah"

Ya, pretty awesome. Something I wanna do sometime have fun editing like this. I love the "Han Solo" part with Shipwreck and the weed part. So, funny.

P-Meds, Uncut, the Bomb

So, you know pseudoephedrine, the thing that actually decongests you? The thing that was in NyQuil and the thing that allowed you make piles of meth in your home made chemistry lab with the directions your AP Chem teacher gave you in your class lecture? Well, not very readily available (My wallet is still wincing, damn, j/kin'). Anyhow, ABC has an article about is this withdrawl of pseudoephedrine to behind the counter and out of certain cold remedies really counterproductive? I say yes! I want the bloody cough medicine that knocks me out, that gets me so wasted that I actually feel better in a hurry ("I wanna be Sedated?"). But in all seriousness, I want my pseudoephedrine back, and it's not just cause I have a cold right now, which I do however it's not a congestion based cold so this doesn't really pertain right now. In the words of the wise intergalactic funk brothers known as the O'Jays.

"You've got to give the People. Give the People what they want. You've got to give the People what they want. Well I done been all over the world. And everybody feels the same. It's a unanimous decision. I say we're ready for a change. You've got to give the people pseudoephedrine! Give the people what they want... We want the truth, the truth and no more lies. We want freedom justice and equality. Meth for You and NyQuil for Me."

So, make my funky medicine. I want my medicine uncut. Who wants to get funked up? I want the bomb. I want the cold-meds. I want my meds uncut. Make my funky medicine. Who wants to get funked up?

Oh on a side note, my AP Chem teacher didn't teach us how to make Meth, we talked about it theory, however we went into gracious details about how to make coke and freebase =).

HOFF-TASTIC

That's right it's the Hoff in his latest music video with an atrociously bad song. But hey it's the Hoff. Kit's in there but he don't talk so that's lame. But hey it's the Hoff.

The Adventures of Lil' Bush

So I was online last night doing stuff and my friend Matt sends me this link. I was like gagh! It's funny, it's disturbing and what's up with Cheney, he's like Frankenstein attack dog or something? Oh yeah and Condi and the tambo, classic. But the Abu-Garib stuff, gosh. But yeah, worth the watch but totally disturbing.

SNOW!

IMG_0370.jpg, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

Jup, it snowed on Saturday morning like at 4 in the am. Of course I went out for novelty factor to enjoy it since I havne't seen snow in a very long time. It was fun. I of courses was the only one out and about wandering around in the snow. Figures.

Me and the snow.

Me writing my initials and my various pseudonyms in the snow.

Thus far classes have seemed like they will be rather good. Still haven't had my monday class yet, I'll have that really bloody early tomorrow, bloody 9am. ARGH! Went to the film library for the first time today, the monitors suck. Or maybe it was a combination 7-11 special, with the monitor and an old VHS tape. I hate VHS. But yeah, watched, Chronicles of Summer, french documentary from the 1960's. I'm not sure if it really is a documentary, however it frames itself very interesting. It starts off by basically saying we're making a documentary and all the people involved in it are well aware of it. They talk about the issue of having the camera watching them. At the end they have all the people in the film see the film about themselves and then get their responses. The directors end up talking about this discussion at the very end of the film. It was kind of odd how much the directors themselves were part of the film because they were very overtly within it. Interesting though. Oi, next weeks screening assignment is super long for my Experimental Documentary class.

Oh and one last thing, I swear one of the teacher's for Massively Multi-User (class looking at MMO games) looks like Ron Jeremy. Just add the mustache and you got Ron.

19 DEGREES!!!

So, I'm back in New York. I have my first class a morning class, argh. Now of course like an idiot I flip the times for my two mornring classes and think today is my 9am class not my 9:30 class, so I ended up there a half hour early. However, this morning taking a shower was like Groundhog Day, the water was sooo cold and it wasn't warming up. It sucked so bad. That's not the worse though, the temp outside was 19. That is the coldest weather by far I've ever been in. It was bloody cold I could feel it on my nose and face.

The class though I had this morning is like an experimental documentary class. Seems like it will be a rather good class. She showed exerpts of Nanook (hate that film), Man with a Movie Camera (love that film), and Rain (never seen before). When we were discussing we saw at the end of class one person in class was singing praises for Nanook (he'd never seen it before). He thought it was so great, and realisitc, and felt like it could have been made like 10 years ago that it was so contemporary and ahead of it's time. Now me, I've always viewed Nanook as this non-doc doc, because the blasted thing for the most part was totally staged and from a Euro-centric viewpoint. So, I responded to his comment and said that it was constructed and that he clearly says that's what he's doing in the intertitles at the begining, basically I was just shy of saying that Nanook is not a documentary at all. Towards the end of class it was confirmed that, that was in fact the case. I was kinda surprised no one had seen Man with a Movie Camera. So, this week we're posed to go to a screening at MOMA. However, what is being screened I have already seen and well, wasn't very much impressed, Pine Flats by Sarah Lockhart. 150 minutes of 15 10 minutes shots that are mostly static, slightly racial, sexual, and pedophillic. So yeah, that's how things go from New York as of yet. Got class later tonite. Gotta start making dinner so off I go. Lates.

Chévron Con Techron

Enroute To Have A Chat With a Morman Child...

I'm not sure what of the country this is but it's getting towards Salt Lake City.

Pac Man Crop Circle

IMG_0340.jpg, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

So, on monday I flew back to New York. I was supposed to arrive at 9:30 PM. That didn't happen. So, first the plane is delayed by an hour or so. Then over the intercom this worker tells us in a rather defensive and downwardly looking speaking voice to us, that we are going to have to make a "technical" stop in Salt Lake City, aka have a chat with a Morman child liken to Dr. Tran "a man of action." She, went on to explain in unreasonable detail that there was high winds and short runways at Burbank therefore we could not take off with the full load. She went on to explain that we couldn't leave passengers behind (um, ya?), that we couldn't leave luggage behind due to security issues, lastly we would therefore have to leave fuel behind to get off the ground and then we would have to fuel up in Salt Lake so we'd have enough fuel in the advent that we get stuck in bad weather.

So, we depart. This picture was taken somewhere along the way to Salt Lake, I'm glad I looked out the window to see it. Salt Lake City was completely covered in snow, completely white. We landed on the far end of the airport, I could see some Air Force cargo planes, maybe C130's? So, we taxi for like 20 minutes all the while I gotta use the restroom. We finally stop and I stand in line for the can. We got fueled by a Chevron Tanker.

We're about to take off the engines are up to speed and then they start shutting down. I'm like agh, this can't be good. So, then the pilot is like sorry for more bad news JFK has initiated a ground freeze due to rain so we can't take off until it ends which could be up to an hour and a half. So, we sit in the plane for a good half hour or more and then are cleared to take off. Mind you I'm like bloody starving and need foodage. We take off and head to JFK ending our chat with the Morman child.

Oh mind you they decided to give us free movies on the flight due to the fact we were getting totally shafted along with supposedly 25 dollars back, we'll see. However, the movies were crap, I mean come on Bandidas? What the heck is that? They had The Last King of Scotland which I had wanted to see but come on totally not the movie for a plane ride, to heavy for that sorta thing. The last one I have no clue what it was nor do I remember the name. I swear if they had had Gigli on it I would have incited a riot. Cesar had a very interesting question about would it be a riot or considered "Terrorism." (refer to Robot Chicken)

We land at JFK at about 12:30 am, a full 3 hours late. Get my baggage by 1:25 or so, and i'm starved, down some O.J. and some cheese, non of the food places were open. The terminal seemed like a ghost town. Was standing in line for a cab. The limo guys were trying to hustle some fares. They asked me where I was headed and they were like we'll take you I'm like naw I'll wait for a yellow. A few minutes later they come back and are like we'll give it to you for a flat rate which was like the yellow cab flat rate sans-tip. I was like ok, I had to share but who cares. It woulda cost me like 5 bucks or so more with the tip in the yellow. The people I shared with though apparently had a meeting the next morning at 8 AM and one of their luggage didn't end up on the plane so he was gonna have to reuse clothes and had no deodorant nor toothbrush and he was like argh. They were total out of towners, not like i'm a resident or something but they were constantly chattering about oh I think I know where we are, it's right on the tip of my tongue, bs, trying to impress the other. They also kept talking about bloody reality TV so annoying. Anyhow I got home at about 2:30 AM and crashed promptly good thing I had no class the next day.

No Dumb Jacks

The Death of MacAddict

01-12-07_1358.jpg, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

A sad month for MacAddicts. MacAddict magazine has ceased to exist and has become MacLife. WTF IS THAT? Man, I got my issue in the mail and thumbed through it, total crapola. I'm so saddened. It's like pandering to the idiot consumer. I saw this copy at Fry's that has like a peel away sticker to reveal the new name. What happened to the good ole' days when it was real hard core, when you had an ex-con as editor in chief. Max if you can here me, let's take back the magazine! Viva La Revolucion!

DS LITE!

DS LITE!, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

I finally got it! Finally found it at a a store a black DS Lite. So, my Mom got me this for Christmas totally unexpected out of the blue. But yeah she wan't able to find it, but it finally came back in stock. It's so awesome. The screens are mad bright. Mario Kart has been fun so far and just got the New Super Mario, that game looks so damn awesome. I love the animation in it. An odd thing to mention, but the game play is awesome so far haven't gotten very far yet. Totally loving it can't wait to get Advanced Wars: Dual Strike.

New Age Beverages

New Age Beverages at Ralph's in Valencia. This has got to be the first market I've been in that has such a section. Now, I have no clue what a New Age beverage is or what it can do for you. If you have any info on this I'd welcome the enlightenment just don't get all new agey on me.

New Years Eve, Post 2006, & The Six Million Pound Cat!

IMG_0296.JPG, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

Well 2006 is now gone. It was actually a pretty good year for me looking back on it. I spent New Years Eve with Audrey. We went to go see Cat Power, Gnarls Barkley, & The Flaming Lips at the Galatin Center at USC. The concert was pretty awesome and we had really nice seats. Center and like 6th row but we ended up going down to like the 3rd row because of these obnoxious guys sitting behind. Good thing the people who had those seats never showed up. Cat Power was great. Gnarls' entrance was really cool, 2001: Space Oddessy style all in space suits, which was pretty awesome. They did a partial cover of "Major Tom" from David Bowie, that was awesome, I wished they had done the whole song. Now calling the string section "Asa" instead of the G-Strings was hillarious, however he had to add the stipulation of "No not you" in reference to the one guy member of the string section. Overall though it was odd Gnarls kind of fell flat on the crowd oh and i wanted to personally choke the life out of whoever made the visuals for them. The mix was very amorphous.

Speaking of the mix, Me and Audrey ended up naming one of the sound guys, "Cookie." Why? Cause during the whole course of the concert he was eating chocolate chip cookies. He also was very expressive about things not going right when they went wrong, lots of hand gestures and stuff, very funny. One of the funniest was when the people handeling the lights turned them off like the next band was gonna come on when they hadn't even finished setting up the stage. Hands went up and he turned around and head shaking ensued from Cookie.

The Flaming Lips were awesome. Their entrance and exit was like a UFO landing and taking off. They played a lot of old stuff. Highlights were the cover/karaoke-sing-along of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" that was being intercut with a nude sunbather, BBQ cooking, and applying wasabi as if it were sun screen. Awesome. At midnight they let loose all these like giant balloons, it was so fun hitting those things around. Me and Audrey attempted to beam Cookie with one but we failed.

Anyhows, Totoro here is one thing that has definitely changed since last year. He's large, like super large, like 15lb plus large. He's not even like 2 years old. New Years resolution for him and me is to do more cardio, haha. I have no clue as far as New Years resolutions I'd really want to actually resolve to do, we'll see. Well hope you all had a good New Years, hey. Here's to 07'.

Christmas & Boxing Day

IMG_0285.jpg, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

Well Christmas has concluded and another holiday is upon us. Boxing Day. Oh Canada! Ahh yes my non-official nationality and homeland, how I love thee. But yes Christmas! It was good. Got to see some family, got some very very very nice things. Two of which are right here. I mean come on what's more awesome than a cig smoking a cig, it's like canabalism. You know what is? The Nintendo DS Lite, which I haven't actually taken possession of yet but will soon. My mom got me it and I got Mario Kart DS for it already. My friend Kaly says it's like the definitive Mario Kart which is awesome, can't wait to get some multiplayer action going. Oh and got plans for New Years Eve. Audrey called me up and was like The Flaming Lips and Gnarls Barkley are playing on New Years Eve in L.A. I'm like cool and she's like do you want to go see them. I'm like and then she interrupted me to say I already bought tickets, haha. That should be awesome. Yoshima battle on. On a side note it seems that a random stack of cards will beat any group of people at the game Apple's to Apple's according to two tests that have been conducted. More testing will ensue and the finding will be published. Indeed. Well I hope everyone had a good Christmas and has an equally good Boxing Day. Take cares alls.

Good Ole' United Melon

IMG_0271.jpg, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

Today, we went downtown to pick up the Christmas tree. Yeah I know, really late, but we didn't have time. We went to where we always go, United Melon in Downtown Los Angeles. They generally have Christmas Tree auctions going but since it's so close to Christmas they weren't having any, so that kinda sucked. I enjoy the competitive spirit when hunting for the right tree. Not a huge tree after all but a good tree, nice Douglas Fir, 8 footer maybe a lil bit more. Not super fat though.

I think there is really something going on in the Christmas tree industry. Christmas tree prices have gone up, Christmas tree quality has gone down along with their height, the size of tree lots have shrunk, and the number of Christmas tree auctions and auctioneers have dimenished as well. United Melon for instance used to have 4 auctions, 2 large lots, and multiple rails to bring in box cars full of trees, not to mention multiple concession trucks or roach wagons as they are sometimes called. I remember when I was younger and we were always able to find 10 foot + trees. Now your lucky to find a 10 footer or even a 9 footer. I remember getting a 12 foot tree for $55 dollars and now your lucky to find one and it's going to cost you over a 100 dollars. I remember the biggest tree we ever had was a 14 footer. We didn't pay over 80 dollars for it. On the auction front, I've seen generations of auctioneers. One in particular Vanessa, who is actually the daughter of this one auctioneer who used to auction trees off when I was young, she still auctions, but this year she was the only auctioneer. When I was young United Melon used to have 4 auctioneers, with generally 2 auctions going at once and then they'd break and change auctioneers. Today though there's only Vanessa, and as good as she is, she just doesn't have the speed and the twang of those who have come before her. Maybe everyone has moved to synthetics but I believe in real fresh trees that once were alive and are no longer. I miss the glory days of the Christmas tree industry.

Baja Bug

Lawn Mower Racing 2007!

Random title at Fry's that reassures me if someone puts up money for games like this, if worse comes to worse I can have a job working on LawnMower Racing Mania 2009, NOW WITH MORE WEEDS!

¡Hola Gatita habla español!

12-21-06_1457.jpg, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

Another Fry's oddity. I guess it had to get dubbed sometime, haha. I almost would watch it just for the fun of it. Makes me think of that copy of Reservoir Dogs I watched dubbed in Spanish.

Wendy Wu: Kickin' Edition

12-21-06_1455.jpg, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

So, I was at Fry's Electronics with a few of my friends and we happened upon this DVD title in the DVD section. Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior. The story of a girl who is trying to become homecoming queen but then like apparently she's the reincarnation of some famed woman warrior from the Wei dynasty and must fulfill her destiny. Feels like a shameless ploy by disney, to attempt to garner minority viewers from the asian american community with their new heroine Wendy Wu. Sad Disney, just sad.

The King Reigns

Well apparently Burger King's XBox games have sold 2 million. That puts it into the range of Gears of War the "big" game out for the XBox right now. Really quite funny. Anyways, now that I'm home I've found myself just hanging with friends or on the computer. I need to start getting productive. Just a few days ago I played Star Wars Monopoly with my friend Jon and his brother for about 5-6 hours I forget. It was fun but gee, I haven't played Monopoly in so freaking long. Been playing a lot of WoW (World of WarCraft) lately as well, been leveling up. It's all Christmas time in the world, haha. I need to get out of the house to shop for Christmas, I hope I get a chance. It's so odd how quickly it comes up when you get off school, it's like a few days and bam it's Christmas. Gotta also design the annual card as well, gotta get cracking on that. Prolly gonna go get our Christmas tree tomorrow down at the Christmas tree auctions downtown. This is really sad but I was able to get a hold of a lot of old Macintosh games, I'm so thrilled to play some of these old games again. It's really sad there hasn't been any real games out there that have gotten me excited for the computer in a long time. Oh wells.

Kazama v. Yoshioka

Kazama v. Yoshioka 2nd run at the D1 Grand Prix Final at Irwindale. Kazama passes Yoshioka. Awesome move. In the end, Nomuken almost got bumped out by the dark horse MacNamara from Ireland, Tanaka won the event over Kazama, and Kumakubo won the season.

Boonkie Tapping

I dropped off Audrey at LAX on saturday afternoon to fly back to Chicago for Christmas. Then I headed back home and then out to Irwindale Speedway. What for? Why for D1 GRAND PRIX! It was the final for the season. It was raining and Matt, Cesar, and myself got fairly wet. Me probably the least though because I had my heavier waterproof jacket. The speeds were a lot slower due to the rain and there was very little smoke but still the races were good. Here we have Vaughn Gitten Jr. boonkie tapping I forget his name in the first round of the tandem battles. Vaughn got eliminated in this round.

Jazz at JFK: Jet Blue Terminal

This isn't your Lincoln Center. This is Jazz at JFK: Jet Blue Terminal. So, bizzare to see a jazz quartet busy playing after I get through security and on the way to my gate. Of course I'm not complaining because I love straight ahead jazz but in an airport? Doesn't belong now, the drummer even had a Gretsch drum set. My plane though ended up being delayed by an hour almost. The flight itself was rather bumpy at one point and made me a lil motion sick. First time I have ever gotten a bit sick to my stomach on a plane. I got picked up at the airport by Audrey, so nice to see her.

Physical Computing Class & End of Semester 1

Physical Computing Class, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

Well the semester is over as you can tell. The last week of school for the most part was unstressful which was good. I had most of my projects wrapped up well ahead of their due dates which was good. All of my projects were fairly well received. Two of which were recommended to look for a gallery or public space to display them or to look for funding to make them on a larger scale("Green & Black" & "I.E.D. Field"). The other was recommended to continue working with and to make multiple versions of it ("RBG2CMYK").

The last presentation I had was for my Physical Computing class, this is the class picture of all of us. I'm way in the back on the right you can barely see me. Some of the gals in the class started crying which was like okay talk about attachment. I wasn't particularly sentimental but the class was a good lot of people. The projects in the end were all pretty good and for the most part interesting. Some of course more so than others, hehe.

After this I went and had lunch with my friend Ji-Sun. Good vietnamese place that is bloody cheap during lunch but not so cheap during dinner. In general it's Ji-Sun, Rob, and myself, Rob had class so we all couldn't hang out before I left sadly. When I get back though we're all gonna celebrate since I wasn't going to be around to do so with everyone.

This semester has flown by and it's so odd to be done a quarter done with my graduate degree. Kind of scary in a lot of ways. On another note I got most of the classes I wanted for this coming spring semester which is quite nice. It'll be a lot of reading, writing, and discussing.

Eye in the Sky

The "eye in the sky" used to do the motion detection for my final project for physical computing, the "I.E.D. Field." This was a preliminary setup in prep for the final presentation.

Oh Yeah!

This feller I don't have a name for yet. He's an odd drawing on the white board at my dorm room. I had eaten a can of my roomates chilli by mistake and had gotten him a replacement and he drew up a happy face. I took that and made this fellow. Not sure what sort of personality is, but he's a rather funny lookin' guy.

And I'm Back

Well I'm back. The semester is over, all my projects are done and I'm back home in good ole' South San Gabriel, California. First day back and it rains. What's the deal? Went to the D1 Grand Prix (drift racing) at Irwindale Spweedway. It was the last race of the season. It was good, pretty crazy especially since it was raining. Team Orange totally dominated in the end. Ireland was out there representin' which was cool. But, yeah I'm tired and I'll post up pics and info about the last weeks of the semester and such and what I'm up to now (probably lots of nothing and eating).

The Govenator

12-05-06_0846.jpg, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

"I am the Govenator of Kali-forrrrnia." So, apparently before you leave or when you arrive at L.A.X. you can pick up your "Govenator" t-shirt. Scary isn't it? (The Govenator is brought to you by Audrey mind you, props where props are due.) Oh, finished one final which is awesome. In the process of finishing it or coming to conclusion it was finished I dumped out about a week and half to w weeks worth of work or so of animation stuffs I was originally going to use. Depending on how lazy I am or when I get around to it after I get these other projects done I will be posting it up (which involves learning how to sign a java applet). So, back to verk!

So, this is what I've been working on for my final project for Pixel by Pixel. So, what is it I am actually doing? I am currently taking a still image and compositing part of it and placing live video behind it that is being processed to be converted to CMYK from the RGB color space. Why do this? I'm interested in the whole content associations that are established with color spaces (probably because I have dealt and worked two long with both worlds and have utterly lost my mind dealing with color spaces, proofing, and the like). Print (C.M.Y.K.- Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, & Black), has a certain of weight and value to it inherently due to the costs associated with mass production print as opposed to the RGB color space. RGB (Red, Green, & Blue) is seen basically in anything that is video, tv, your computer, your camcorder, digital camera, etc. Even though on the high end with broadcast video there are large budgets and big dollars being thrown around on one side of the spectrum there is also the other end which is the person who has that crappy Hi-8 camcorder, little point and shoot digital camera, or even just a computer. All of these use the RGB color space and so there is a wide gamut of who has access to these technologies. The biggest issue thus far with this project was trying to figure out a work around for the issue of two video buffers of different sizes eventually being put into the same destination buffer, aka GWorld, (no relation with Ghandi the rap star formerly known as G Spot"). On that note, go watch Clone High (why did you cancel it MTV!) and I am back to work on trying to make this program work faster than a putrid 9fps.

Cobra Commander in Plaid!

Cobra Commander in Plaid, originally uploaded by lt_zanders.

COBRA COMMANDER in plaid. Yes, it's gotten cold enuff for me to bust out the scarf and my grand spanking new jacket with "radial arm motion." Supposed to snow in like 2 hours or least that's what weather.com says. We shall see what we shall see. COBRA COMMANDER demands snowmen to be constructed to create a protective barrier against gung ho and mister LaFitty! But yeah back to programming now =|

The Godfather & The Return of Ska

Well just this week I picked up two new ska albums at a local Tower Records going out of biz massive sale. Those two were Ska-Boo-Da-Ba by the Skatalites and The Last of the Skinheads by Judge Dread. Awesome albums both of them. I've been listening to them all week. Especially one song from the Skatalites by the name of Confucius. Awesome bass in it. So, tonite I was working on my pixel by pixel homework which I was having some difficulties with but made progress and solved a huge prob. I'll post some example pics from it later. Anyhow I meant to go to sleep instead I ended up on You Tube and I ended up looking up the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra. That's right Japanese ska for all of you who haven't heard the news. They've been around for awhile. Got to see them last summer at the House of Blues while they were on their first tour in the states. Amazing. The trombone player, the trumpet player and the drummer unbelievable. So, I was wondering You Tube and ran into the fact that they've played with Puffy Ami Yumi but also that they had covered the Godfather theme. Amazing especially when they slow it down and then go into double time right after. Blood great. T.S.P.O.!
